Peach Payments

A South African gateway with a genuine enterprise product underneath the SME plan. It is the strongest local option for card-on-file subscriptions, and it publishes a complete fee table, which is rarer than it should be.

Rates ex VAT, South Africa, Growth plan. We model the local 3DS card rate. If you are running subscriptions, the rate that applies to you is the recurring one at 3.50% + R1.50 plus R200 a month for tokenisation, which is a materially different number. Daily settlement starts after two weeks of trading on Growth. The Enterprise plan is quote-based, for businesses above R500,000 a month, and Peach publishes no South African volume tiers.

What it accepts

Payment methods.

Visa and MastercardPay by BankCapitec PayApple PayGoogle PaySamsung PayPayJustNowCard-on-file tokens

Strengths

  • The best local subscription and tokenisation story. Card-on-file recurring billing is a first-class product, not an afterthought.
  • Free daily settlement on the next business day, with no payout fee at all.
  • A complete, published fee table covering every method, which is not the norm locally.
  • Its Pay by Bank rate of 1.50% matches Ozow's bank rail, inside a gateway that also does cards properly.

Watch-outs

  • Recurring transactions cost 3.50% + R1.50, not the 2.95% headline. Subscription businesses should model the higher rate.
  • Tokenisation is R200 a month on top, which is the real cost of running subscriptions here.
  • Peach publishes no South African volume tiers, so there is no visible path to a lower rate as you grow.
  • Mauritius and Kenya are priced custom and volume-based, so multi-market pricing needs a conversation.

For developers

Integration and API.

Peach offers hosted, embedded and fully API-driven checkouts, with webhooks for payment notifications and a tokenisation vault for card-on-file charges. Of the local gateways it has the most complete API surface for recurring billing: tokens, scheduled charges and retry handling are supported directly rather than being something you assemble yourself.

That capability is what the pricing reflects. A subscription business pays the recurring card rate of 3.50% + R1.50 plus the R200 monthly tokenisation fee, so the comparison that matters is not Peach’s 2.95% against another gateway’s headline, but Peach’s recurring stack against the cost of building card-on-file handling somewhere that does not offer it.

Confirm payments server-side from the webhook, verify the signature, and treat retries as idempotent. For subscriptions specifically, handle the soft-decline retry path explicitly: a failed recurring charge that is silently dropped is churn you never see.

A R650,00 average basket, R150 000,00 a month, 3% refunded, 4 payout runs a month, incl 15% VAT. Quote-based providers are absent from this table because they publish no rate to compute, not because they were excluded. Card rails carry a chargeback provision of R120 per chargeback, which is an editorial assumption, not a sourced figure: no provider on this site publishes a chargeback penalty amount.
