Rates ex VAT. The published tier ladder is for IN-PERSON card machine transactions only. Online is flat at 2.85%, which the T&Cs call a maximum rate, so custom terms exist but no online ladder is published. The R2.50 payout fee is charged once per successful daily payout regardless of the amount, and R2.50 is the VAT-inclusive figure: the T&Cs price it at R2.17 ex VAT, which is what we model.

Strengths

  • Publishes a full in-person volume ladder down to 2.5%, which is unusually transparent for this market.
  • No monthly fee on the standard account.
  • Online Instant EFT at 2% is a genuinely cheap bank rail.
  • The API uses signed payloads, so integrity checking is built into the integration rather than bolted on.

Watch-outs

  • The attractive tier ladder is in-person only. Online does not step down with volume as far as iKhokha publishes.
  • The R2.50 payout fee is charged per trading day, not per transaction, and only on days money is actually paid out. Daily takings under R10 roll over to the next payout.
  • Settlement can take up to 3 business days outside FNB and Absa, and does not run on Sundays.
  • Online pricing detail is thinner than the in-person rate card, so confirm your online terms directly.

For developers

Integration and API.

iKhokha provides a REST API with webhooks and plugins for the common platforms, plus payment links for merchants who do not want an integration at all.

The distinguishing detail for developers is that its API signs payloads. Request integrity is part of the protocol rather than something you layer on, which removes a whole category of implementation mistake. The usual rules still apply: confirm payments server-side from the webhook, verify the signature, and keep webhook handling idempotent.

The pricing detail online is thinner than for the card machines, which is where iKhokha’s business actually is. If you are integrating for online only, get your terms in writing rather than reading them off the in-person rate card, because the volume ladder that makes iKhokha attractive in person is not published for online at all.

Licence and status

iKhokha's own T&Cs state it is PCI DSS compliant, without naming a level, and that it aggregates under agreements with both Absa and Nedbank, which act as principal to the merchant agreement. It publishes no PASA or SARB licence status of its own, so we have left that blank rather than infer it.

A R650,00 average basket, R150 000,00 a month, 3% refunded, 4 payout runs a month, incl 15% VAT. Quote-based providers are absent from this table because they publish no rate to compute, not because they were excluded. Card rails carry a chargeback provision of R120 per chargeback, which is an editorial assumption, not a sourced figure: no provider on this site publishes a chargeback penalty amount.
